Correcting an invoice already issued
A tax invoice, once issued, is never edited. If goods come back, a price is reduced, a line was wrong or the supply is cancelled, the seller issues a credit note (إشعار دائن) against that invoice. It carries the same content rules as a tax invoice, plus two things: the number of the invoice it corrects and the reason.
- "Credit Note", a sequential number and the date.
- The original invoice's number and date, and the reason for the adjustment.
- Seller and buyer details as on the invoice.
- The lines being credited, each with its taxable amount, VAT and total, as positive figures.
- Totals: the taxable amount credited, the VAT credited and the total.
The VAT effect
The VAT on a credit note reduces the seller's output tax in the period the note is issued, and the buyer's input tax in the same way; the regulations require the buyer to adjust. In Phase 2 of e-invoicing a credit note is an e-invoice document in its own right: it is generated by the compliant solution, cleared or reported like the invoice it refers to, and carries its own QR code. A debit note does the opposite, increasing an invoice's amount.
