Credit note

A document that reduces a tax invoice already issued, naming the invoice and the reason; its VAT reduces output tax in the period issued.

In Arabic: الإشعار الدائن

Meaning

A credit note (إشعار دائن) is issued by the seller when a tax invoice must be reduced: goods returned, a price lowered, a line cancelled, a supply that did not happen. It carries the same content as a tax invoice, plus the number of the invoice it corrects and the reason. The buyer reduces its input VAT and the seller its output VAT in the period the note is issued, not by reopening the earlier return.

In e-invoicing Phase 2 a credit note is an e-invoice document in its own right: generated by the compliant system, cleared or reported like the invoice it refers to, with its own QR code. It is the only way to correct an issued invoice; editing or deleting one is not allowed. The mirror document, which increases an invoice, is the debit note.

Also called: credit memo · إشعار دائن

Example

Golden Customer Co. cancels one of two training days on invoice INV-2026-0001. Al Noor issues credit note CN-2026-0004 for 1,500.00 plus 225.00 VAT against that invoice, reason "service cancelled". Its October return shows 225.00 less output VAT; Golden Customer's shows 225.00 less input VAT.
