Business in Muscat, and the part Aqid ERP plays

Muscat is the capital and the seat of the government, the banks and most head offices: engineering and consulting firms, service companies to the oil and gas sector, trading houses, and the SMEs that Riyada supports across the capital area.

Their books carry the rial in three decimals, a 5% VAT return every quarter, contributions to the Social Protection Fund for Omani employees and end of service for the rest. Aqid ERP keeps the ledger to the baisa, prepares the return as a working paper and runs the payroll with both.

How a business in Muscat runs on Aqid ERP

Rials to the baisa

Every amount is kept and rounded to three decimals, on the invoice, in the ledger and on the statements, so the rounding never drifts between them.

The 5% return from the books

Standard-rated, zero-rated and exempt supplies kept apart on each invoice, and the quarterly return prepared from them with each box opening to its documents.

Statements for the bank and the auditor

Profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow and changes in equity in the IFRS for SMEs set, kept as you work with locked periods.

Social Protection Fund and end of service

Monthly payroll with SPF contributions for Omani employees, end of service accrued for the rest, leave, loans and bilingual payslips.

A month at a engineering services company in Muscat (example)

  1. Say a engineering services company in Muscat invoices OMR 180,000.000 of consultancy and maintenance services in October, all at the standard rate. That is OMR 9,000.000 VAT, OMR 189,000.000 in total, on tax invoices issued from Aqid ERP with your VATIN.
  2. A supplier bills OMR 54,000.000 plus OMR 2,700.000 VAT for office rent and vehicle hire, posted against a purchase order and tagged to the Muscat office.
  3. Payroll for 26 staff runs with Social Protection Fund contributions for Omani employees and end-of-service accruals, and its cost is posted to the books from the same run.
  4. The VAT return shows OMR 9,000.000 output VAT and OMR 2,700.000 input VAT, so OMR 6,300.000 to pay before any other purchases. Each box opens to the invoices and bills behind it.
  5. These figures only show the arithmetic. How VAT applies to your supplies is for your tax adviser, set up before you start invoicing.

The rules in Oman, and what Aqid ERP does with them

VAT: the standard rate is 5%, with exports and some supplies zero-rated as the law allows. The return is prepared from the books in the Tax Authority's layout and every figure opens to the invoices and bills behind it; that layout has not yet been checked against the Authority's portal, and filing stays with you or your adviser.

Money: the rial is divided into 1,000 baisa, and Aqid ERP keeps three decimals on every document, in every report and in the ledger.

E-invoicing: the Tax Authority's Fawtara system is not connected. Invoices and credit notes carry your VATIN and go out as PDF with a QR code.

Payroll: Social Protection Fund contributions for Omani employees, end-of-service accruals, leave and claims, and payslips in Arabic and English. Oman's Wage Protection System salary file is not produced yet; the bank's template is filled from the pay run's figures.

Questions

Does Aqid ERP handle PASI for a Muscat payroll?

It handles the Social Protection Fund, which replaced PASI in 2024: contributions for Omani employees are computed on each pay run and posted with the salary cost. The rates are the fund's current ones, confirmed with your adviser before the first run.

Is Aqid ERP connected to Oman's e-invoicing?

No. The Tax Authority's Fawtara system is not connected. Invoices carry your VATIN and a QR code and go out as PDF; when the Authority's timetable reaches your business, the connection is the piece to add.

Does it run Omani payroll?

Monthly payroll in OMR with Social Protection Fund contributions for Omani employees, end-of-service accruals, leave and claims, and bilingual payslips. The WPS salary file your bank asks for is not produced yet; the run gives you each employee's net pay and IBAN.
